If you are in any way like me, you have often wondered about normal things in life, such as a phone call with a friend, a tv programme with CGI or a helicopter flying through the air and thought, our species was once wandering the earth with rocks and sticks, how did we end up here?

The simplified answer would be that a lot of curious people, just like me and you, tried something to see what would happen. Like “oh I wonder what lightning is made of”. That’s exactly what Thomas-François Dalibard in 1752, proving Benjamin Franklin’s theory that lightning was made of electricity by holding a large pole up in the air during a storm. It feels wrong to credit these two geniuses with the discovery based on the concept of survival bias, knowing somebody possibly made this discovery before them, not living to tell the tale.

Fast forward 145 years to 1897 and a radio wave has just been sent across the sea by Guglielmo Marconi. How. This was done by a computer changing sounds into a code used to model radio waves which were detected and the sound re-created. Rather impressive considering a guy risked his life to check if lighting was electricity 145 years prior.

Eventually in the 1990s, bluetooth, a from of short range, low energy encrypted radio wave transmission was invented and the rest was history. Although I skipped over major periods of time and discovery, I hope I have helped you to understand how we got from throwing rocks at the wall in our cave to me posting a blog about the invention of something which allowed me to play Mario kart with my friends as a kid.
